Owning a personal watercraft
Everyone has seen personal watercraft in action and almost everyone wants to give it a try. Personal watercraft can be great fun for you and your entire family. There are three top selling brands of personal watercraft and they are: Jet Ski, Waverunner, and Seadoo. Each one of these, though similar, offers a unique and exciting experience that is much different than taking a boat out for a leisurely cruise around the bay.
The Jet Ski was the most popular type of personal watercraft when I was a kid in the 1980's. Even though Kawasaki, the maker of the Jet Ski, makes other types of personal watercraft, the name is mostly associated with the stand-up type. You stand on it and squeeze the throttle and off you go. Jet skiing is still very popular today but many people prefer the sit-down style because it gives them a bit more comfort. Jet skiing competitions are held regularly all around the world and are great fun to watch or participate in.
The Waverunner is very similar to the jet ski but instead, one or two people sit down on it as opposed to stand up. Waverunners are made by Yamaha but most people consider any personal watercraft you sit on, a waverunner. These offer more comfort and stability than a stand up model and are a better choice for beginners and younger people.
Seadoo makes some of the most powerful personal watercraft on the market and it can be an exhilarating experience to fly over the water at over 50 miles per hour. Seadoo wasn't a term I heard much on the west coast and later realized the company was Canadian. Seadoo also makes sport boats that are very popular due to their very powerful engines.
As with any boat, personal watercraft operation should be done while wearing life jackets and the drivers should learn what they are doing before taking off. Most jet skis and wave runners will circle slowly if you fall off so you can get back on and not have to swim to shore.
